Nokia PC Suite

Nokia PC Suite

Nokia PC Suite, how To use your phone as a modem. One Touch Access, Bluetooth Pairing

Nokia PC Suite allows you to connect your Nokia phone with a PC, and provides you with a wide range of applications to manage your phone on your PC. Nokia PC Suite can be used with compatible Nokia mobile phones. However, not all Nokia PC Suite features and applications can be used with all phone models. For more information on the PC Suite features supported by your phone, and information on phones supported by various PC Suite versions, refer to the www.nokiausa.com/pcsuite pages.

To install and run Nokia PC Suite applications, you need:
  • At least 300 MB of free disk space
  • One of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit editions
  • Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit editions (Service Pack 1)
  • Windows XP Professional x64 edition (Service Pack 2)
  • Windows XP (Professional or Home Edition) (Service Pack 2 or later)
  • Administrator rights to the PC to install software on it.

Get Connected wizard

The Get Connected wizard helps you to connect your mobile phone to a PC. After you have completed the wizard steps, you have established a connection between your phone and the PC, and can start using Nokia PC Suite applications.
The Get Connected wizard consists of the following steps:
·         Select which connection type to use when connecting the phone to the PC. This can be cable, infrared or Bluetooth wireless technology.
·         Establish and configure the connection.

Have your mobile phone and the connectivity accessories at hand, for example a connectivity cable if you want to use cable connection.

Tip:

Get Connected opens automatically when you install Nokia PC Suite. You can also return to it later on if you want to establish a new connection between the phone and PC or start using another connection type. To do this, select Settings > Manage connections in the Nokia PC Suite main window.

Selecting connection types

Get Connected shows a list of the connection types available in your computer. Possible connection types are:
·         USB cable
·         infrared (IrDA)
·         Bluetooth wireless technology.

Also, please note that not all phone models support all the connection types listed in Get Connected. Refer to the user's guide of your mobile phone for more information on the supported connection types.
If you already have an active connection and attempt to create a new connection of the same type, Get Connected asks for confirmation before it creates another connection of the same type.

 USB Cable connection:

1.      Switch on the phone.
2.      Connect the cable to the PC when prompted to do so by Get Connected, and then connect the other end of the cable to the phone.
3.      The first time you use cable connection, you have to wait until Get Connected finishes installing the required cable drivers. Accept possible notifications that appear on the PC screen. When the settings have been completed and connection is established, Get Connected shows the connection details.

Note:
When you connect your phone to the PC via USB cable, make sure you have the default mode, Nokia mode or PC Suite mode selected in your phone if you want to use Nokia PC Suite with your phone. Nokia PC Suite switches your phone automatically to the correct USB mode if needed and if supported by your phone model. See the user guide of your phone for more detailed information on the USB modes available.

If Get Connected lists infrared (IrDA) as one of the connection types, your computer is IrDA-compliant. In addition, your PC needs to have an integrated or external IrDA receiver. Not all phone models support infrared - refer to your phone's user's guide for more information on infrared availability and activation instructions.

To connect a phone to a PC via infrared

1.      Switch on the phone.
2.      Activate infrared reception on your phone.
3.      If you are using a Symbian phone, make sure that you have selected to use the infrared connection type on your phone.
4.      Ensure that the IR ports of the phone and PC are pointing at each other and that there are no obstructions between the two devices.

Note:
When connecting via infrared, the preferable distance between the two devices is one meter (about three feet) at most.
If your PC cannot detect the phone, check that the PC's infrared port is activated. To find troubleshooting information on Nokia PC Suite, you can browse the FAQ search database on the Nokia web pages. To do this, go to the Nokia PC Suite main window and click Web > Nokia PC Suite on the web > FAQ. Note that this requires an Internet connection.

Bluetooth Connection

You can use Bluetooth wireless technology to connect a mobile phone with Bluetooth connectivity to a compatible PC. If Get Connected lists Bluetooth in the connection types, you have a PC with Bluetooth connectivity, that is, with appropriate Bluetooth wireless technology software installed. In addition, your PC needs to have a Bluetooth adapter plugged in. When connecting via Bluetooth wireless technology, the phone and PC must be within a 10 meter radius of each other (about 30 feet).
1.      Activate the Bluetooth wireless technology connection on your phone and make sure that you have made your phone visible in the phone's Bluetooth settings. When you activate Bluetooth for the first time, you are asked to give a name to your phone. This name will be used whenever you pair your phone and the PC and it can also been seen by other Bluetooth device users.
2.      Make sure the Bluetooth adapter is plugged in to the PC.

Bluetooth Device Selection

1.      Wait while Get Connected searches for supported Bluetooth devices in the range.
2.      Select your phone from the list of detected devices.
3.      Click Next.
 Tip:

If your phone appears on the list of detected devices before the search is complete, you can click Stop search, and select your phone from the list.

Note:
If Get Connected cannot find your phone’s name immediately, the phone's Bluetooth address is displayed instead. Click Search for more phones to re-run the search.

 Bluetooth Pairing

If you are connecting your Nokia phone to the PC using Bluetooth wireless technology for the first time, you need to pair the devices using Nokia PC Suite's Get Connected wizard. Pairing means that you code two Bluetooth devices to communicate so they can exchange data.
Bluetooth wireless technology uses two different methods of pairing:
·         A method where you enter a passcode on your phone.
·         A method where you compare the passcodes displayed on your phone and PC.

To pair your phone and PC, follow either instructions A or B explained below.

Note:
When pairing the two devices, follow the instructions both on the PC screen and on the phone's display.

To pair your phone and PC
A.
1.      Enter a passcode:Use the passcode generated by Get Connected:
First, press Next in Get Connected and then enter the passcode on your phone when the phone's display prompts you to do this.

OR

Create your own pass code (1-16 characters, numeric):
First, enter the passcode on the PC and enter the same passcode on your phone when the phone's display prompts you to do this.
In both cases, the passcode is used only once and you do not need to memorize it.
2.      Authorize the connection between your Nokia phone and your PC. Select Yes when the connection request appears on the phone’s display.

Note:
You can set your PC as authorized, which means that individual connections between your phone and your PC do not need a separate authorization. Find the Paired devices view on your phone, select your PC, and edit the PC to be authorized or trusted, depending on the term used in your phone.

Connection established

After the phone and PC have been connected, Get Connected shows the connection details. These details include information on the connected phone and connection type.

Tip:
You can rename your phone in the main window of Nokia PC Suite. To do this, click Settings > Rename phone and type a new name in the field showing the connected phone's name.

Now you can start using the Nokia PC Suite applications that require PC connectivity. To access an application, press its icon in the Nokia PC Suite main window or right-click the Nokia PC Suite icon in the Windows notification area, at the far right end of the taskbar, and select the application you want to use.
If you want to start an online demo, select the PC Suite demo option on the last page of Get Connected. The demo shows you how Nokia PC Suite works and how to use the various applications. The demo requires a network connection.

Note:
You can return to Get Connected later on if you want to establish a new connection between the phone and PC or start using another connection type. To do this, select Settings > Manage connections in the Nokia PC Suite main window.

Phone Selector

The Phone Selector dialog opens if there is more than one phone connected to the PC. In the dialog, you select which phone to use with Nokia PC Suite.
The detected phones can be seen on the Phone Selector list. If a phone name is disabled (grey), the phone model is not supported by the application you are using or you are having problems connecting your phone to the PC. Try re-connecting your phone and PC in Nokia Connection Manager or Get Connected.
Click Connection... to activate/deactivate connection types or to configure communication ports for the appropriate connection types.
Note:
If you cannot see your phone in Phone Selector, the connection type your phone is using is not active in Nokia Connection Manager. Open Nokia Connection Manager and select the appropriate connection type(s). A selected connection type has a check mark in the box in front of it.

Connect to the internet

One Touch Access
With One Touch Access, you can establish network connections using packet data (in GPRS or 3G networks, depending on the phone and network capabilities). Connection can be established via cable, infrared, or Bluetooth wireless technology.
To be able to use One Touch Access, you need to have modem drivers installed on your PC. Nokia PC Suite automatically installs the modem drivers listed below depending on the connection type you are using:
·         Modem drivers for the supported USB and serial cables.
·         Nokia infrared modem for an infrared connection.
·         PC Connectivity Bluetooth modem for a Bluetooth wireless technology connection. In addition, if you have Microsoft Bluetooth installed on your PC, a standard Bluetooth modem is installed automatically. You can use either the PC Connectivity Bluetooth modem or the standard Bluetooth modem.
Or

Using your phone as a modem

You can create a network connection to the Internet by using your phone as a modem with a variety of commercially available data communications applications. A connection can be established via cable, infrared, or Bluetooth wireless technology.

To use your phone as a modem, you must have the following:

·         Appropriate data communications software installed on your PC.
·         A subscription to the appropriate network services from your home service provider or Internet service provider.
·         The appropriate modem drivers installed on your PC. Nokia PC Suite installs these automatically.

To use your phone as a modem
1.      Connect your phone to the PC.
Depending on what connection type you want to use and what your phone and PC support, you should
o    activate the IR port of your phone. Place the phone and the PC so that the IR ports of the two devices point at each other. If you are using a Symbian phone, make sure that you have selected to use the infrared modem on your phone. See the user's guide of your phone for more detailed information.
o    connect the cable to the PC first and then connect the other end of the cable to the phone.
o    activate the Bluetooth wireless technology connection of your phone and pair your phone with the PC using Get Connected.
2.      If you have been using your phone with other Nokia PC Suite applications, disable all connection types from Nokia Connection Manager.
3.      Create the data connection with the connection program of the PC (for example, "Network Connection" in Windows XP).
4.      Select the modem you want to use. You can select either Nokia xxxx Cable, Nokia xxxx USB, or Nokia xxxx IrDA as the modem (xxxx stands for the model number of the phone), or PC Connectivity Bluetooth, depending on the phone you are using and the modems you have installed. Then make the data call.
5.      When you want to continue using other Nokia PC Suite applications, end the data call, and select the connection types you want to use in the Nokia Connection Manager again.
